August 3 - Stations of the Crossroads
Time to go, resupplying
and
buzzing
down
to
Redlands
for a first and last coffee at
Augie's with
John and company,
then retracing
steps to the
freeway,
trending
north
and
west
on
210,
up
against the mountains north
and
south
and
west
(the
Transverse
Ranges),
finally
over
them
(via
Newhall
and
Gavin
Canyons),
to
Santa
Clarita,
and
way
over
them
(Violin
Canyon,
Paradise
Valley,
Whitaker
Peak,
the
Ridge
Route,
Pyramid
Lake,
Liebre
Gulch,
Black Mountain,
Hungry
and
Peace
Valleys,
Gorman
Ranch,
Tejon
Pass /
Ridge /
Valley --
over
into
Kern
County --
the
long
precipituous
descent
of
the
spectacular
Grapevine)
into
the
Central
Valley,
the
lengthy
pull
through
the
flatlands
almost
always
accompanied
by
relief,
distant
or
close,
towards
the
quadrant
of
the
western
glare.
Typically,
great
to
be
away,
and
great
to
be
home.
