August 17 - Ah the Bright Future

First night of the Fall 2011 Music Literature class, and all goes rather smoothly, the throngs of late add people waiting in the hallway, while only enrolled students enter the classroom.  Lamentably only room for 6 of the seemingly 20-30 hopefuls, and even that few are too many, as several latecomers on the roster are not able to arrive until after the break.  Of those of us actually in the class, a good time is seemingly had by all, already looking ahead to next week's quiz.

N.B. Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra - shocked to see the misspelling above!  And how about that two-toned pen?

Before that,

a working break at Elephant bar, continuing to test drive the academic copy of Finale 2011 that Doug has graciously assisted in loading into the laptop, thanks to the kindly influence of Owen -- specifically, the first two movements of Duo Sonata No. 1 -- discovering advantages and disadvantages re Encore -- chief advantages are more sophistication, higher user base, and less probability of crashes / corrupt files.

Previous to this, working in the lab at same, discovering that initially it's even difficult just to select any item to begin editing.  A bit of help from both gurus is welcome: double-clicking and "a-tool-for-everything" seem to be informing concepts.  Also, a reasonable amount of info online re support.  While this is hardly an intuitive program, perhaps it not be all that formidable after the steep learning curve is surmounted.

With progress being made, turn to recording more

Acid Loops, Op. 195
XVI. Cinemascape
XVII. Funk Factory
XVIII. Not Just Another Pretty Bass
XIX. Sonic Excursions
XX. Rock Bass

And again, before such, third day of Music Theory, reviewing for tomorrow's Quiz 1,

having taken the

eventful morning commute through varied views

(including the apparent removal of Long Barn's roof).

After the evening class, rather wistful to look back at the Tuesday-late-night sessions, but at least this way, am able to go home earlier, though not without greeting / touching base with Rory Snyder and Mark Steidel.

In the dead of night, discover a wonderful notion re Encore and Finale.  Rather than merely saving MIDI in former and uploading in latter (the same process used in the brief stint with Sibelius), there is somewhat text-based pdf-like music format called Music XML, which can be used as an intermediary between the two programs.  Fortunately the more recent (but nevertheless, unreliable) version of Encore supports the process.  Opening such files up in Finale becomes a positive experience, with most of the information from the older files preserved and editable -- in some ways better than the transition from one version of Encore to the next.  Bring over the latter three movements of the Duo Sonata this way, and follow up with the errant Sanctus from Missa The a Deux.  Any time for other musical tasks in all of this?

Well...

John Kendall Bailey checks in with a Bernard Herrmann piece for the SF Composers Chamber Orchestra.  As such, as previously offered, allow postponement of Solomon (or something else) until fall, and, accordingly, defer further work on parts generation at present.
