November 26 - Under Uncertain Skies
Up early with Harriet, Tisha, and Claire --
we make our goodbyes,
down through
Oregon on Route 11 to
Pendleton,
then 80 from the long transit down the Columbia, back through Gilliam
(fraught with windmills
and
railroads past
Arlington,
Blalock
and
Philippi
Canyons),
Sherman (the cliffy passage from the John
Day
to
Deschutes
Rivers),
Wasco
(The
Dalles,
Celilo,
and
views of Mt. Hood
on the cusp of
arid
and
humid),
Hood
River
(with
its
spectacular
snow-speckled
slopes), and
Multnomah (Bonneville Dam,
the
Falls,
and environs). Following this, the even longer journey southward on 5, through the
Willamette and
Umpqua Valleys
(the latter including Roseburg
and
Myrtle
Creek), the roller-coaster of Canyon Creek / Glendale / Stage Coach / Wolf Creek / Smith Hill / Sunny Valley /
Sexton Mountain / Hugo /
Grants
Pass / Rogue River / Medford / Ashland / Siskiyou Summit / Yreka / Weed / Shasta City / Dunsmuir / Redding, beyond which,
the fog grows thick before a second-to-final stop at Corning, and thence -- with heightened senses throughout -- home.
