January 5 - Musical Paradise
Wake up to the semi-splendor of semi-warm, semi-sunny semidesert,
and
proceed
down
I-5
(through the
Santa Clarita Valley
and
over
Newhall
Pass)
and
405 (across
San Fernando,
vaulting
the
Santa
Monicas)
towards
a
quiet
Venice
sidestreet
to
meet
Jim
Fox of Cold Blue Recordings for a follow-up interview in preparation to write New Grove American Dictionary articles on him and the record label.
We decamp to a Rose Avenue Cafe and
then
cut
back home in delightful discourse, with many musical examples in
sheet and
sound.
Back
on
the
road,
there's
time to follow the sunset up the
Coast Road
to
Leo Carillo State Beach,
where the recent rains have wrecked havoc on the route to
Point Mugu.
Auspicious to return anyway for a
rendezvous
with
Debby How at her
splendid setup and thence to a tremendous
Thai place for
cheery chat.
All aliterations aside, there are miles beyond
downtown Los Angeles to
Yucaipa for the safe haven of John Browning and company.
