September 25 - Portents

Up early,

perhaps due to the ethereal light from without, and, sure enough,

a red sky to take under due consideration.

Later, seemingly on cue, while doing yard work with Harriet, a few sprinkles, ending the typical summer rainless season (last previous precip, June 28),

and the string of 80's/90's/100's weather

(highest for year so far, 102, on July 5 --

and the last temp in the 70's the day after the last rains... 6/29).  Compose third page of The Cop and the Anthem and ninth for Psalm 73 (finishing latter, and recording with the Garishtone Ensemble), producing also page 8 of pdf for Sinfonietta: II.  Relatively late in the day, design a call/invite for the

Fresh Voices XI and XII shows, based on a photo that could very well be next year's blog picture, calling to mind that we are approaching 5 years on blogspot

(2008,

on

the

verge of

2012).

Also prepare material for tomorrow's teaching evaluation at DVC.

September 22 - By the Silvery

Down the freeway in the

half-

light,

fully

foggy

beyond the Sulfur Springs,

through

the

pastoral

reaches

of

Sonoma,

to

clear

skies

again in

Marin for

another

walk with

Crystal and company.

After quick errands around town and in

Berkeley (picking up the March 2006 back issues of 21st-Century Music),

blast past the Caldecott

to meet the

Theoreticians for

Quiz 6, with examples drawn from Monteverdi, Gesualdo, Schutz, Purcell, Vivaldi, and J.S. Bach.  From here, a beeline home -- musical endeavors of the day (parts for Solar Suite: II, fifth-page pdf for Sinfonietta: II, sixth sheet of Psalm 73 composed), plus dinner and

Applause (1929) with Harriet.

September 21 - Renaissance Plan

Evening class with the Music Historians covers from Giles Binchois and company through Josquin des Pres, Costanzo Festa, Henry VIII, and the Spanish expulsion of the Muslims, with several world-music wanders and

make-up quizzes, while the morning Theoreticians (after home endeavors producing new pdf parts for Suite "Sol[ar]": I) leap ahead to the J.S. Bach's Passacaglia in C Minor as Dictation and Board Harmony (intriguing student compositions all week, plus a bit of Job: A Masque).

In between, there are papers to grade at Yan's Garden and Elephant Bar, plus fourth-page pdf produced for Sinfonietta: II.  Late after classes, fifth page of Psalm 73 is composed.
